Anthony Fauci’s first major venture with a large pharmaceutical partner began with the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980’s wherein, as the new Director of NIAID, he pushed the use of AZT as the only viable treatment for HIV. The new, public-private approach that he pioneered during that time was very lucrative, and it has been replicated for each epidemic scare since then.
